What can a vehicle report tell you?

Different sources provide different pieces of a vehicle's history. No single check should be treated as a guarantee of a car's complete condition, history or legal status.

01 MOT and roadworthiness records

MOT history can show recorded test dates, outcomes, mileage readings and advisories for eligible vehicles. It does not replace a mechanical inspection and does not guarantee a vehicle's present condition.

02 Mileage history

Recorded mileage readings may help you spot inconsistencies between historical records. Gaps in available records are possible, and a report cannot guarantee that a displayed odometer reading is genuine.

03 Finance and ownership risks

A suitable commercial data provider may offer finance and related vehicle-history checks. Availability, source coverage, report wording and the meaning of each result must be confirmed before these checks are offered for sale.

04 Theft, write-off and identity

These checks may require access to specialist datasets. Do not assume that a free MOT lookup or vehicle-tax lookup includes finance, theft, insurance write-off or every identity-risk check.

Official information and commercial reports are different. GOV.UK services can provide certain official vehicle details, including eligible MOT history. They do not automatically provide every check sold by a commercial vehicle-history provider. See the official MOT history service for its scope and limitations.

Contact our team →
What is the difference between the packages?
The packages are intended to offer different levels of vehicle-history checking. Their final differences must be based on the actual reports and checks available from the selected providers. Review the confirmed inclusions before ordering.
Does every package include a finance check?
Not necessarily. A finance check generally requires access to an appropriate commercial data source. It should only be advertised as included when the chosen package genuinely provides it.
Can a vehicle report guarantee that a car is safe?
No. A report contains information available from the sources checked. It cannot guarantee a vehicle's mechanical condition, reveal every past event or replace an independent inspection and test drive.
Can I use a registration number or VIN?
The supported search method depends on the vehicle and the report provider. The order form should clearly identify which details are required for your chosen check. A VIN is not a substitute for a registration number in every service.
How long does it take to receive the report?
The delivery time depends on the report source and fulfilment method. The final product page and checkout should display a realistic timeframe before payment. Do not advertise instant delivery unless it is actually supported.
What if information is missing from a report?
Some records may be unavailable, incomplete or inconclusive. Customers should review the report's own explanation and contact the service team if they need help understanding a result. Your published terms should explain the applicable correction, cancellation and refund process.
Are these official government reports?
Auto’s Vault is a vehicle-check service, not a government department. Certain information may originate from official sources, while other checks may rely on commercial providers. The report should identify its scope and source appropriately.
Can I buy a report for any vehicle?
Eligibility depends on the vehicle, its identifiers and the data sources available. Confirm that the selected service supports the vehicle before completing your order.
